Restoration and Repair
As well as expert rug cleaning we also offer a suite of restoration options, from relatively simple repairs to the edges and fringes, to fully rebuilding whole areas of a rug. Continue reading to learn more about the rug restoration services we can provide.
Fringes
The fringes of hand-knotted rugs are where the vertical foundation threads that run the length of the rug terminate. When the fringes of a rug are damaged, there are three ways to proceed:
-
Stop-ends:
We start by trimming off the frayed parts of the existing fringe. We then remove a few lines of knots immediately below the existing fringe, to expose the foundation of the rug. We undo the horizontal threads holding the vertical threads in place, creating a new fringe. We secure the base of the new fringe by tying a new thread to each vertical thread. This is demonstrated in the video below.

-
Plain binding:
We remove the fringe entirely and rebind the edge in a similar fashion to the long edges.

-
Artificial fringe:
We secure the damaged edge and attach an artificial fringe to it.
Long-edges
The long edge, or "Selvedge" of a hand-knotted rug is where the foundation is held together at the sides to prevent it from unravelling. It is important to repair fraying on this part of the rug to prevent more costly-to-repair damage from occurring in the middle of the rug.
Our process for repairing the selvedge is the same used when the rug was initially constructed:

-
The original selvedge cord is replaced with a new one. It is tied tightly in place to help preserve the shape of the rug.
 -
The piping around the cord is replaced with fresh new material, in keeping with the original design.
Complex Repair
Even when a rug has been damaged in the middle, it is not beyond repair. Our expert technicians are capable of reconstructing whole areas of the rug using the same techniques that were used in its original construction.
