Our Process

The deep cleaning method we use is known as a ‘Persian Wash’, which is a full water immersion system used in the native rug weaving nations. Our process of specialist rug cleaning involves the following steps:

Dust Removal

The rug is placed in a large tumbling machine to gently massage dust, grit, pet hair, moth and insect eggs out of the pile.

Stain Treatment

Any stains are treated to aid in removal. If they are recent they will generally be removed altogether, else the appearance may be reduced. We frequently remove stains caused by red wine, animal urine, tea and coffee

Washing Stage

The rug is submerged in our Persian bath and thoroughly scrubbed front and back several times with specialist shampoo and conditioner.

Water Removal

Most of the water is removed in one of our three centrifuges, each specially designed for different types of rugs of all sizes.

Drying

The rest of the drying process takes place in our humidity controlled drying room. No heat is used, allowing total water removal and shape retention.

Restoration and Repair

As well as expert rug cleaning we also offer a suite of restoration options, from relatively simple repairs to the edges and fringes, to fully rebuilding whole areas of a rug. Continue reading to learn more about the rug restoration services we can provide.

Fringes

The fringes of hand-knotted rugs are where the vertical foundation threads that run the length of the rug terminate. When the fringes of a rug are damaged, there are three ways to proceed:

Fringe Repair
  • Stop-ends:
We start by trimming off the frayed parts of the existing fringe. We then remove a few lines of knots immediately below the existing fringe, to expose the foundation of the rug. We undo the horizontal threads holding the vertical threads in place, creating a new fringe. We secure the base of the new fringe by tying a new thread to each vertical thread. This is demonstrated in the video below.

  • Plain binding:
We remove the fringe entirely and rebind the edge in a similar fashion to the long edges.

  • Artificial fringe:
We secure the damaged edge and attach an artificial fringe to it.

Long-edges

The long edge, or "Selvedge" of a hand-knotted rug is where the foundation is held together at the sides to prevent it from unravelling. It is important to repair fraying on this part of the rug to prevent more costly-to-repair damage from occurring in the middle of the rug.

Selvedge

Our process for repairing the selvedge is the same used when the rug was initially constructed:

  • The original selvedge cord is replaced with a new one. It is tied tightly in place to help preserve the shape of the rug.

  • The piping around the cord is replaced with fresh new material, in keeping with the original design.

Complex Repair

Even when a rug has been damaged in the middle, it is not beyond repair. Our expert technicians are capable of reconstructing whole areas of the rug using the same techniques that were used in its original construction.

Complex Repairs

We choose appropriate materials to reconstruct the damaged area one knot at a time, rendering our repairs practically invisible to the untrained eye. This is perfect for undoing moth-damage, irremovable staining or water-damage, or high-traffic areas that have worn through.

The cost of these repairs depends on a number of factors, including the amount of damage, how fine the rug is and the materials that we will need to procure. For instance, a rugged tribal piece composed of pure wool with 50 knots per square inch will cost less to repair than a silk rug with 460 knots per square inch.

Underlay

We stock underlay specifically designed for use on both hard flooring and fitted carpet. Underlay is recommended for a variety of reasons:

  • Over time, hand knotted rugs can lose their shape and become stretched. Underlay minimises the degree of stretching that occurs with regular traffic, maintaining the rugs shape.

  • Underlay enhances the feeling of luxury by adding a layer of cushioning to the rug.

  • Without underlay, rugs do not stay in place. Friction between the rug and the floor causes wear to the knots on the underside of the carpet.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does cleaning benefit my rug?

Cleaning is essential for keeping your rug looking and feeling as good as possible. Over time, rugs accumulate dust and other particles deep in the foundation. This increases friction between the knots, accelerating wear-and-tear, as well as dulling the colours and reducing the softness of the fibres. Depending on use, we recommend professional cleaning every 2 - 3 years.

How do I book?

Get a quote by entering the dimensions of your rug into the form above. Select any repair options or additional services like underlay. For multiple rugs, click "Add Rug" and repeat. If you would like us to collect and deliver your rug, use the "Request Collection" button and we will get in touch to arrange for it to be collected. Alternatively, you can bring it to our shop yourself. Our address and opening hours can be found at the bottom of the page. It is not necessary to book an appointment.

How long does the process take?

About one to two weeks, depending on size and drying time. If you require a speedier turn-around, do let us know and we will try our best to accommodate you

Will stains be removed?

Generally, recent stains (up to 2 weeks old) will be fully removed. Depending on the nature of older stains, we will attempt to at least reduce their appearance.

How do I pay?

We can either take a card payment on collection, or send you an invoice to be paid by bank-transfer prior to delivery

Can my rug be repaired without cleaning?

Before we conduct repairs, it is essential that we clean the rug. Over time, dust and grit will accumulate in the foundation that is impossible to work around effectively. Residues on the fibres must also be washed out, as they will make the material brittle and unmalleable.

Do you only clean Persian Rugs?

Our process is suitable for almost all rugs and floor coverings, not just Persian rugs. It is not suitable for animal-hide rugs, however.

How are my rugs insured?

Your rugs are fully insured against loss or damage. We are proud to say that we have never needed to claim on this policy

Is my rug worth cleaning?

This is mostly subjective. If you want to continue using your rug and extend its life-span, while keeping it looking and feeling its best, the answer is yes!
