The deep cleaning method we use is known as a ‘Persian Wash’, which is a full water immersion system used in the native rug weaving nations. Our process of specialist cleaning involves the following steps:
Dust Removal Stage
Stain Treatment Stage
The rug is placed in a large tumbling machine to gently massage dust, grit, pet hair, moth and insect eggs out of the pile.
Any stains are treated to aid in removal. If they are recent they will generally be removed altogether, else the appearance may be reduced. We frequently remove stains caused by red wine, animal urine, tea and coffee.
Rug Washing Stage
The rug is submerged in our Persian bath and thoroughly scrubbed front and back several times with specialist shampoo and conditioner.
Water Removal Stage
Most of the water is removed in one of our three centrifuges, each specially designed for different types of rugs of all sizes.
Rug Drying Stage
The rest of the drying process takes place in our humidity controlled drying room. No heat is used, allowing total water removal and shape retention.
The fringes are neatened, and a final check is carried out. Rugs are carefully inspected for quality control purposes.

Rug and Carpet Restoration
We are highly trained specialist repairers and restorers of all hand knotted rugs and carpets, including Oriental, Turkish, Chinese, Indian, Afghan and Persian. Hand knotted rugs are built on a network of interwoven threads (known as the warp and weft). Pile is knotted on to this warp and weft foundation. Our portfolio of restoration work includes some extremely rare and valuable pieces that have been neglected and deteriorated. These pieces are often unique and irreplaceable - it is possible and economically pragmatic to have such pieces restored to their former glory. We have undertaken multiple larger restoration projects where part of the rug is lost through wear or other damage.
Fringe Repair of Rugs and Carpets
General use can cause damage to the fringes. Fringes are the weft threads of the foundation of the rug or carpet, so worn fringes can cause the rug to literally unravel over time.
Three options are available in this case, depending on the degree of damage:
We can apply ‘stop-end’ thread to halt any further damage. The fringes themselves can then be trimmed or re-built;
Alternatively, a few warp threads can be removed to neaten up the edge of the carpet, and a new ‘stop-end thread’ is added;
Finally, if damage is more severe and some of the pile itself is affected we can re-build the end. This is done by reinstating warp and weft threads, interpret the existing pattern and adding further knots to re-pile the new foundation threads.
The sides of the rug (selvedge) can become worn, which can result in warp threads being depleted. We can re-bind and secure these selvedges (side cords) – in securing the edges further damage is prevented. In addition the sides are neatened and provide a renewed look.
We can repair any holes and tears in your rug and carpet by reinstating the foundation threads, then matching the existing pattern and adding new knots to the foundation.
Moth damage can cause loss of pile. We repair these threadbare regions by matching the existing pattern and adding new knots to the foundation.

How to Look After Your Rug
Carpets and rugs should be professionally cleaned every two or three years.
Regular hoovering is essential and helps to reduce the build up of dust and grit within the foundation of the rug.
Regular inspection of rugs and carpets is very important to check for any moth activity – particularly those regions that are hidden beneath furniture. If unchecked moth damage can seriously hurt your rug and can be expensive to repair.
We strongly advise against the use of normal steam cleaning and surface cleansing. These methods do not extract the accumulated particles at the foundation of the rug. During such methods, the superficial addition of moisture and fluids results in the particles forming a solid mass. This causes weakening of the fibres, and in the long term damage to both the pile and foundation of your rug.
If tea, coffee, wine or anything else that leaves stains is spilled on your rug; contact us as soon as possible, and we will be able to remove the stain.
We strongly advise the use of underlay to prevent slippage and the eventual stretching of your rug.
We recommend having any damaged areas on your rug repaired or secured to prevent against further damage.
We recommend rotating your rug every six months to avoid uneven wear and fading from direct sunlight.
Why is it Important to Have Your Rug Repaired?
Protect your investment
With rug and carpet prices constantly increasing, repair becomes economically advantageous.
Some rugs and carpets are collectible and will increase in value if kept in good condition.
Enjoying your rugs and carpets in the future
Dealing with repairs as early as possible allows a more complete restoration.
Your rug will last for generations if cared for properly.
Repairing will bring your rug back to condition and prevent further deterioration.
Our expert restorers have skills and knowledge accrued over generations that allow them to deal with each rug’s individual character.
We stock the best and cheapest underlay specifically designed for both hard flooring (i.e. wood, tiles, stone) and rugs on top of fitted carpet.
Underlay is recommended for a variety of reasons:
Over time, hand knotted rugs can lose their shape and become stretched due to foot fall.
Underlay helps to minimise the degree of stretching that occurs with regular traffic, therefore, the shape of the rug is maintained;
Underlay enhances the feeling of luxury;
Rugs and carpets can 'migrate' (due to footfall). The movement between the carpet and the floor creates friction. The friction, over time, causes wear to the knots on the underside of the carpet - underlay is designed to stop this migration;
Our underlay is the best on the market:
Leaves no residue
Designed for use on floors with underfloor heating
Suitable for a wide range of floor types: laminate, parquet, stone floor, ceramic tiles, cork and PVC flooring
Contains no plasticiser and toxin free
Suitable for handwashing and machine washable (up to 30°C)
100% polyester fleece
